1600 Paying Customers and Not a Dollar in Funding: the Story of Wingify

wingifyFor all the ballyhoo about flimsy startups raising millions in venture, capital, there are dozens of entrepreneurs building successful businesses without a single dollar in funding. Wingify, a New Delhi, India based startup is one such example. The company makes the Visual Website Optimizer tool, counts Microsoft, Groupon, and AMD among its clients, and recently announced that it had reached 1600+ paying customers.

Wingify was profitable from day one – something not many startups can boast of. Their sole product, Visual Website Optimizer (which they proudly tout as the “world’s easiest A/B testing tool”) makes it easy for customers to make changes to their websites and gather feedback. They offer multivariate testing and behavioral targeting as well. It’s quick, intuitive, efficient, and I’m rather proud that it comes from a startup located not more than half an hour from where I live.

The Visual Website Optimizer business model is simple: pay an upfront fee, every month. There are no demo accounts and freemium upgrades. It’s a no-nonsense model, and judging by their customer base, extremely effective. Prices start from $49/month for up to 10,000 users.

What I like the most was the company’s confidence in rejecting funding. In a startup world where success if often measured not by profit but by the amount of money raised, this is a refreshing stand. I wish more companies were as confident in championing their products and their ability. Their competition, which includes Optimizely and Maxymizer must be quaking in their boots.
