Even if you’d been living under a rock the past two months, you would have somehow heard of OMGPOP’s DrawSomething. It’s that popular.
A Pictionary-like game, DrawSomething has been topping Apple’s charts for weeks and is seeing up to 10M daily active users (that’s a whole lot of users).
InsideMobileApps did a great story on OMGPOP CEO Dan Porter who’s finally struck gold after whaling it out in the wilderness with the OMGPOP brand for more than an year. The DrawSomething success has been remarkable and nothing short of it. The numbers don’t lie: the app has seen 17.5M downloads so far and is now netting over 200M advertising impressions per day. Revenue has been impressively strong: half the revenue is coming from premium version downloads, the other half from ads and virtual currency.
In fact, the company’s chief revenue officer, Wilson Kriegel notes something in the article that should be of interest:
“I feel like we could double our ad revenues and be making more than six figures a day from that if it were managed well”
Six figures a day, from advertising alone. Add in revenue from virtual currency and paid downloads, and you can bet the company won’t bow out without a multi-million dollar offer (or a Rovio like bid for global supremacy).
Personally, I haven’t played the game yet – haven’t had the time – but I have more than a few friends who’ve been hooked on to it harder than Angry Birds. Perhaps I’ll consider spending a few hours with it later today and report back my impressions here!
